Length. Your nerve endings sit at a known depth. Standard spicules run 200–250 micrometers, which is past the barrier and into that layer — that's where the sting comes from. Air Spicule™ is engineered at 60 micrometers: through the barrier, well short of the nerve. It isn't a gentler edge or a softer material. It's a shorter rod that stops before it reaches what hurts.

Different question than most people expect. Pain tells you a spicule reached your nerve — it doesn't tell you an active reached your dermis. Those are two different depths.
